3 Historic Palm Springs Neighborhoods That Define the City

by Lisa Angell

Palm Springs is famous for its sunshine, golf courses, and stunning desert scenery. But the real magic of this city comes from its history and architecture.

During Hollywood’s Golden Age, Palm Springs became the playground of movie stars, musicians, and celebrities. Over time, several neighborhoods developed their own identities, architectural styles, and fascinating backstories.

Today we’re exploring three historic Palm Springs neighborhoods that helped shape the city and still attract homebuyers from all over the country.

Racquet Club Estates

The Birthplace of the Alexander Home

Located on the north side of Palm Springs, Racquet Club Estates is one of the most important neighborhoods in the history of mid-century modern design.

In the late 1950s, the Alexander Construction Company partnered with architect William Krisel to create a revolutionary idea: modern design that everyday buyers could afford.

The result was a neighborhood filled with clean lines, open floor plans, and iconic roof designs that still define Palm Springs style today.

Fun Architectural Detail

Although these homes look like custom properties, the neighborhood actually uses a small set of core floor plans. To create variety, the builders rotated the designs and introduced several different roof styles including the famous butterfly roof.

You’ll also see homes built by Jack Meiselman, a rival developer. His homes often have a distinctive layout where the primary bedroom sits on the opposite side of the house from the other bedrooms.

Old Las Palmas

Hollywood’s Desert Playground

If Racquet Club Estates represents mid-century design, Old Las Palmas represents Palm Springs glamour.

This neighborhood features stunning estates dating back to the 1920s and includes Spanish Colonial architecture, classic California ranch homes, and modern renovations.

Why So Many Celebrities Lived Here

Back during Hollywood’s Golden Age, studios required actors to stay within two hours of Los Angeles in case reshoots were needed.

Palm Springs happened to be exactly two hours away, making it the perfect weekend escape for Hollywood stars.

As a result, Old Las Palmas became home to celebrities like:

• Liberace
• Dinah Shore
• Jack Benny
• Kirk Douglas

One fun detail to look for if you drive through the neighborhood is Liberace’s guest house mailbox shaped like a grand piano.

These little historical details are part of what makes Palm Springs such a unique place to explore.

The Movie Colony

Palm Springs' Most Famous Neighborhood

The Movie Colony is one of the most recognizable historic neighborhoods in Palm Springs.

Located near Ruth Hardy Park, this area became the private sanctuary for some of the biggest names in entertainment history.

Residents included:

• Cary Grant
• Marilyn Monroe
• Tony Curtis
• Frank Sinatra

One of the most famous homes here is Frank Sinatra’s Twin Palms Estate, known for its piano-shaped swimming pool.

Legend has it that Sinatra would fly a Jack Daniels flag between the two palm trees outside his home to signal to neighbors that the party had started.

Another nearby landmark is the El Mirador Tower, originally part of the El Mirador Hotel built in 1928. Its opening helped spark Hollywood’s love affair with Palm Springs.

Why Historic Neighborhoods Are Still Popular Today

Historic neighborhoods like these remain highly desirable for buyers because they offer:

• Unique architecture you won’t find in newer developments
• Walkable areas near downtown Palm Springs
• Cultural and historical significance
• Strong interest from architecture enthusiasts

Many buyers looking for mid-century modern homes in Palm Springs begin their search in these historic areas.

Final Thoughts

From the architectural innovation of Racquet Club Estates to the celebrity history of Old Las Palmas and The Movie Colony, these neighborhoods tell the story of how Palm Springs became one of the most fascinating cities in California.

Whether you love design, history, or simply exploring beautiful neighborhoods, these areas offer a glimpse into the desert’s past while continuing to shape its future.
