Palm Springs Lock-and-Leave Living: Why 2320 Paseo Del Rey Might Be Just What the Doctor Ordered
There are homes you buy because you need somewhere to live.
And then there are homes you buy because you want somewhere to exhale.
That is a big part of the appeal of Palm Springs.
For a lot of homeowners, the desert is where they come to trade traffic, schedules, gray skies and long to-do lists for sunshine, mountains, a pool, golf, dinner somewhere fabulous, and maybe an afternoon during which absolutely nothing productive happens.
Highly underrated, by the way.
That was the inspiration behind a recent video we created for 2320 Paseo Del Rey in Canyon Estates. The premise is simple: my doctor has apparently prescribed sunshine, relaxation, less yardwork, regular pool therapy and treatment for a severe mid-century modern deficiency.
Obviously, the only responsible thing to do is follow doctor’s orders. 😂
The joke is fun, but there is a very real real estate question underneath it:
If you are buying a Palm Springs getaway, how much of your time do you actually want to spend maintaining it?
The Appeal of Lock-and-Leave Living in Palm Springs
People use Palm Springs homes in all kinds of ways.
Some live here year-round. Some spend the winter months in the desert. Others come for long weekends, holidays, golf trips, events or several weeks at a time.
For many second-home and seasonal buyers, convenience matters almost as much as the home itself.
A true lock-and-leave property can make that much easier.
You arrive.
You unpack.
You enjoy Palm Springs.
And when it is time to leave, you lock the door and go.
That can be very different from owning a detached property where every visit might also include checking irrigation, arranging landscaping, scheduling pool service, dealing with exterior maintenance or wondering what happened while you were gone.
There is nothing wrong with owning a private pool and a large yard. I sell plenty of those homes too.
The important question is whether that is how you want to spend your Palm Springs time.
Canyon Estates Gives You More Than Just a Condo
This is where 2320 Paseo Del Rey gets especially interesting.
Canyon Estates is not simply a collection of condos in South Palm Springs. It is a thoughtfully designed community with real architectural history.
The approximately 79-acre community was designed by noted architect Charles E. Du Bois, AIA, developed by Roy Fey, and began taking shape in the late 1960s.
That matters because Canyon Estates was created around the kind of lifestyle people still come to Palm Springs looking for today: open space, strong indoor-outdoor living, dramatic mountain surroundings, golf, mature landscaping and distinctive mid-century architecture.
Rather than feeling like a typical attached-home development, Canyon Estates has a much more expansive, resort-like character.
You have broad greenbelts, mature palm trees, mountain views and a golf course woven through the community. The listing for 2320 Paseo Del Rey specifically includes golf course and mountain views, along with golf within the development.
That changes the experience completely.
You are not just buying the interior of a home.
You are buying into a setting.
Mid-Century Modern Character With Palm Springs History Behind It
Palm Springs and mid-century modern architecture have become almost inseparable, and Canyon Estates gives buyers a chance to own within a community designed during the era that made this architectural style famous.
Charles E. Du Bois is part of that story, and the architecture throughout Canyon Estates reflects the emphasis on clean lines, open spaces and connection to the outdoors that buyers often associate with classic Palm Springs living.
At 2320 Paseo Del Rey, that architectural personality is paired with the ease of a single-level residence in South Palm Springs.
So if part of your Palm Springs dream is walking into your home and immediately feeling like you are actually in Palm Springs, this community delivers that in a way newer developments sometimes cannot replicate.
Pool Therapy Without Maintaining Your Own Pool
One of my favorite lines from our video is that my fictional doctor specifically prescribed:
“A pool that somebody ELSE maintains.”
Funny?
Yes.
Also a surprisingly legitimate real estate consideration.
A private pool can be wonderful, but it comes with maintenance, equipment, utilities, cleaning, repairs and responsibility.
For a buyer who primarily wants to arrive in Palm Springs and relax, a community pool can offer a very different ownership experience.
You still get the sunshine.
You still get the water.
You still get the lounge chair.
Someone else gets the pool-maintenance checklist.
That tradeoff can be especially attractive for seasonal owners and buyers who do not plan to be in residence all year.
Golf, Greenbelts and That Palm Springs Exhale
One thing Canyon Estates does particularly well is combine the architecture with the surroundings.
There is golf within the development, broad landscaped areas, mature palms and mountain views that give the community a real sense of openness.
And that is part of what I call the Palm Springs “exhale.”
If you have driven out here from Los Angeles, you probably know exactly what I mean.
You get past the windmills, the mountains start opening up around you, the palms appear, and somehow your shoulders drop an inch or two.
You are here to decompress.
Swim.
Play some golf.
Have a great dinner.
Sit outside with coffee.
Read a book.
Or maybe do absolutely nothing.
That is why the setting matters just as much as the house.
Less Yardwork, More Palm Springs
If your vision of a Palm Springs weekend is waking up, having coffee on the patio, going for a swim, playing golf, heading out for lunch and deciding whether your afternoon involves shopping or a nap, spending Saturday doing yardwork probably was not part of the fantasy.
Low-maintenance properties allow owners to spend more of their limited time actually enjoying the destination they purchased the home for.
And in a community like Canyon Estates, you still get the lush landscaping and resort-like feeling.
You just do not personally need to spend Saturday morning with pruning shears.
That is what I call excellent time management. 😂
A Second Home Should Fit the Way You Will Actually Use It
One mistake I see buyers make is focusing almost entirely on features while giving too little thought to how they will use the home.
Before buying a seasonal or second home, I recommend asking questions like:
- How many weeks or months each year will I realistically be here?
- Do I want a private pool enough to maintain one?
- Do I enjoy gardening and exterior projects, or would I rather avoid them?
- Will I leave the property vacant for extended periods?
- Is golf important to me?
- Do I want something updated, or am I comfortable remodeling?
- How much storage will I need?
- Do I want a property that feels distinctly Palm Springs?
- What HOA amenities and responsibilities are included?
- What ongoing ownership costs should I consider?
There is no universally correct answer.
The goal is to buy the Palm Springs home that matches the Palm Springs life you actually want.
Who Might Love 2320 Paseo Del Rey?
This style of property may make sense for someone looking for:
- A Palm Springs second home
- A seasonal desert residence
- A lower-maintenance property
- Mid-century modern architectural character
- Golf course surroundings
- Mountain views
- Community amenities
- A single-level home
- Indoor-outdoor desert living
- A home that is easier to leave for extended periods
- A property where vacation time can actually feel like vacation time
And for someone who also appreciates living in a community with genuine Palm Springs architectural history, Canyon Estates adds another layer entirely.
The Bottom Line
The funny premise of our video is that my doctor prescribed Palm Springs.
The more serious message is that the right Palm Springs home can make it remarkably easy to step out of everyday life for a while.
And 2320 Paseo Del Rey is not just about the home itself.
It is about waking up in Canyon Estates.
Looking out toward the golf course.
Seeing the mountains and palms.
Taking advantage of the community amenities.
Enjoying the architecture.
And having the freedom to spend your time here doing the things you actually came to Palm Springs to do.
Come to the desert.
Unlock the door.
Relax.
Swim.
Golf.
Eat somewhere wonderful.
Enjoy the sunshine.
Do absolutely nothing if that sounds better.
Then lock the door behind you when you leave.
If that sounds suspiciously like the Palm Springs lifestyle you have been looking for, 2320 Paseo Del Rey may deserve a closer look.
Apparently, it is doctor’s orders. 😂
You do not need to be ready to buy tomorrow. Sometimes the best place to start is simply understanding what is available, which communities fit the way you want to live, and what type of ownership makes the most sense for you.
