El Paseo Palm Desert: The Ultimate Guide to Shopping, Dining, Art & Desert Lifestyle

by Lisa Angell

If you’ve ever heard someone call El Paseo the “Rodeo Drive of the Desert,” let me tell you…

It’s not just hype.

El Paseo in Palm Desert is one of the most iconic shopping and lifestyle destinations in the Coachella Valley — a palm-lined stretch of boutiques, restaurants, public art, and hidden gems that instantly makes you feel like you’re on vacation… even if you live here full-time.

Whether you’re visiting for the weekend, planning a move, or dreaming about a second home in Greater Palm Springs, El Paseo is one of those places that gives you an immediate sense of the Palm Desert lifestyle:

Relaxed. Walkable. Upscale. Welcoming.

So… let’s go shopping. 😄

🌴 What Is El Paseo?

El Paseo is Palm Desert’s premier shopping and dining district, located right in the heart of the city. It’s known for its:

  • Luxury and local boutique shopping

  • Art galleries and design studios

  • Beautiful outdoor patios

  • Public art installations

  • Walkable, resort-style atmosphere

  • Seasonal events and community energy

It spans multiple blocks and is designed for strolling — not rushing.

This is one of the most photographed, visited, and loved areas in Palm Desert for a reason.

🚋 A Hidden Gem: The Free Courtesy Shuttle (Yes, Really!)

One of the coolest surprises about El Paseo is something many visitors don’t even realize exists…

El Paseo offers a free courtesy shuttle that drives up and down the district every day.

While filming my American Dream segment, I met Charlotte, one of the wonderful drivers, who explained it perfectly:

El Paseo covers nine blocks, and there are over 250 stores and restaurants throughout the area — so having a shuttle makes exploring easy (especially when it gets warm).

The shuttle can:

  • Pick you up and drop you off anywhere along El Paseo

  • Help you get back to your car with shopping bags

  • Take you from shop to restaurant to gallery

  • Share recommendations and local tips

🕚 Hours: Daily from 11:00 AM – 6:00 PM
💰 Cost: Completely free

I didn’t even know about this before filming — and now I tell everyone. It’s such a great perk.

🎨 Public Art Everywhere You Look

One of the things I personally love most about El Paseo is that it’s not just shopping…

It’s an experience.

You’ll find artwork everywhere:

  • Sculptures along the sidewalks

  • Eclectic installations near storefronts

  • Pieces right in the center of the street

  • Galleries featuring local and international artists

If you’re an art lover, you could honestly come down here just for the walking art tour alone.

It gives El Paseo a creative, elevated feel — without ever feeling stuffy.

☕ Coffee, Patios & The Perfect Desert Day

El Paseo is the kind of place where you can spend an entire afternoon without even realizing it.

A perfect day might look like:

  • Morning coffee and a stroll

  • Boutique browsing

  • Lunch on a sunny patio

  • A stop into an art gallery

  • Maybe dessert (because… obviously)

  • Sunset views with the mountains in the background

Palm Desert does outdoor living so well, especially in the fall, winter, and spring months.

It’s the desert lifestyle at its best.

🍽️ Where to Eat on El Paseo (My Local Favorites)

El Paseo is full of amazing dining options, and if you spend any time here, you’ll quickly realize this is one of the best foodie pockets in the entire Coachella Valley.

Here are a few personal favorites I always recommend:

⭐ The Daily Grill

My very first trip to El Paseo, I had lunch at The Daily Grill, and it’s still one of my favorite lunch spots in the whole valley.

Highly recommend it.

And by the way…

Best sourdough bread (in my opinion) in the Coachella Valley. 🥖✨

⭐ Wilma & Frieda’s Café

This is such a beloved Palm Desert staple — perfect for brunch, coffee dates, or a cozy breakfast on the patio. If you want that classic desert morning vibe, this is the spot.

⭐ Kitchen 86

Fun, stylish, and always a great experience — whether you’re stopping in for happy hour or dinner. It’s one of those places that feels lively without being overwhelming.

⭐ Talay Thai (Just Off El Paseo — Worth It!)

Okay, I have to say it…

Talay Thai is hands-down some of the best Thai food in the entire valley, and I’m a very picky Thai eater. 😄

It’s just slightly off El Paseo, but absolutely worth the short drive if you’re craving something flavorful and authentic.

🛍️ Luxury Shopping + Design Inspiration

El Paseo is known for luxury shopping, but it’s also just fun to explore — even if you’re window-shopping.

Some of the iconic stops include:

  • Designer boutiques

  • High-end home design showrooms

  • Jewelry and specialty shops

  • Art-forward luxury brands

One of the stores I visited was Roche Bobois, which is such a fun place for modern design inspiration.

✨ Baccarat Crystal: A Fun El Paseo Moment

We also stopped into the famous Baccarat Crystal Shop, and it was absolutely gorgeous.

They recently celebrated 260 years of Baccarat crystal, and I learned a fun insider fact while filming:

That deep red crystal color Baccarat is famous for?

It comes from heating 24-karat gold, and at a certain temperature… it turns red.

How cool is that?!

El Paseo is full of little moments like this — where shopping turns into an experience.

🏡 Living Near El Paseo: Palm Desert Lifestyle & Real Estate

One of the biggest reasons buyers love Palm Desert is lifestyle convenience.

Living near El Paseo means you’re close to:

  • Dining and shopping

  • Hiking and outdoor recreation

  • Golf courses and country clubs

  • Cultural events and galleries

  • Easy access to the rest of the Coachella Valley

Palm Desert offers a wide range of housing options, from low-maintenance condos to golf community homes and full-time desert residences.

For many buyers — especially those relocating or purchasing a second home — Palm Desert is a perfect “center-of-the-valley” choice.
